This approach focuses on environmental, economic, and social benefits for subsistence farming communities. It may be primarily driven by local initiatives. It includes an agreement with local farmers, individually or collectively (Village/Cooperative), the government, and technical partners, ensuring carbon rights and ownership to local farmers and communities considering land tenure regulations in Timor-Leste.

The primary goal of blue carbon farming is to enhance the climate resilience of subsistence farmers while providing them with an additional income source. This approach aligns with Timor-Leste’s efforts to address Mangrove's deforestation and environmental degradation, contributing to the global blue carbon credit market.

Describe what you need the most

• Funding: To finance the mangrove reforestation and conservation efforts, we need resources to procure seedlings, cover operational costs, and support community-based activities such as training and livelihood improvements. Climate finance is crucial for scaling these activities.
• Expertise: We seek technical expertise in areas like sustainable forestry, climate resilience, and carbon credit verification. Expert guidance is essential to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project and align it with international blue carbon standards.
• Technology: Access to tools for monitoring mangrove growth and carbon sequestration is needed. Technologies such as satellite imaging or mobile-based platforms would help track progress and measure environmental impact efficiently.
• Community Engagement: Support in capacity building for local farmers and community members is vital. This includes training in mangrove restoration techniques, climate awareness, and management of carbon rights to ensure active and informed participation from all stakeholders. </aside>

Describe your customers and the problem you are solving

• The project will be implemented in a mangrove community group in the coastal area of Ulmera village, Liquica Municipality of Timor-Leste. And targeted beneficiaries (customers) are 100 households, 500 population consist of 40% women, and 60% men including any other vulnerable people in the communities. The area for mangrove planting is 5 hectares, with seedlings planted of 10,000 trees with an average of 2,000 mangroves/hectare. </aside>

• Pain point:

Mangroves in Timor-Leste are widely distributed along the coast of North and South of the country with continuous as well as fragmented patches. The total area covering about 1,300ha, was reported by Alongi, 2014. Richards and Friess, 2015. Since the 1940s agriculture, timber, and open-for-settlement (Alongi, 2014) heavily impacted the ecosystem. 90% of Timor-Leste’s mangroves that estimated to be around 9,000ha in 1940 limited and destructed due to anthropogenic pressure. The proposed blue carbon farming innovation project will contribute to addressing some of these shortcomings by accessing climate finance to implement the activities related to mangroves restoration and conservation, staff mentoring and pieces of training, community training, community livelihoods and awareness raising at the municipal and community level.
